Social media ‘buzz’ about miscarriages

Miscarriages and preterm birth (PTB) can be difficult experiences for expectant mothers, and many seek out positive support systems to help cope. As the world has become more digital, social media has become a support system for women who have experienced these events, according to new research published in Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology. The study aimed to better understand how Twitter users discuss the topics of miscarriage and PTB, analyze the trends and drivers, and describe the perceived emotional state of women who have experienced a miscarriage.

Methods
The authors obtained 291,443 Twitter posting on miscarriages and preterm births from January 2017 through December 2018. They applied Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to identify major topics in the data. LDA models are used for uncovering latent topics within a large set of text. Words are assigned weights within particular topics given assumed probability distributions. The authors also used time series decomposition methods to assess temporal trends and identify major conversation drivers. In order to determine the emotional content of 7282 personal miscarriage disclosure tweets, the authors classified the tweets into six non-mutually exclusive categories: grief/sadness/depression, anger, relief, isolation, annoyance, and neutral. 

Results
Based on their findings, the authors discovered that the topics in their data fell into eight groups: celebrity disclosures, Michelle Obama’s disclosure, politics, healthcare, preterm births, loss and anxiety, flu vaccine and ectopic pregnancies. However, they noted that the political discussions around miscarriages were largely a result of a misunderstanding between abortions and miscarriages. Within miscarriage disclosures, grief and annoyance were the emotions most commonly expressed by users 50.6% (95%CI 49.1 – 52.2) and 16.2% (95% CI 15.2 to 17.3), respectively. The authors also noted that postings increased with celebrity disclosures; celebrities were considered strong and brave for publicly discussing the topic and Michelle Obama’s disclosure generated substantial response. These celebrity disclosures also led to increased disclosures by women who had similar experiences. For example, Obama’s disclosure resulted in a response approximately 3.6 times higher than the weekly average of postings in 2018. Postings also increased with pharmacists’ refusal of prescribed medications and with outrage over the high rate of preterm births in the United States.

Conclusions
Based on the results of their study, the authors believe that celebrity disclosures lead to the biggest increase in discussions of miscarriage on social media. They also believe that the results provide an insight of current public perceptions of miscarriage and illustrate how individuals use Twitter to share information and/or seek support. A better understanding of how individuals who have experienced miscarriage use social media may be informative for clinicians who provide miscarriage care and treatment.

Inside the Philip Morris Campaign to ‘Normalize’ a Tobacco Device

At this year’s Davos World Economic Forum in Switzerland – a gathering of some of the world’s richest people – Philip Morris set up an “Unsmoke your mind” lounge, where panelists argued against regulations preventing “truth in marketing” by tobacco firms looking to promote smoking alternatives.

IQOS is sold in about 50 countries, including the United States through a partnership with U.S. Marlboro maker Altria Group Inc. The two companies pledged to regulators that they would market the device only to adult smokers, showing sample advertisements of adults conservatively dressed in business attire.

But in other markets across the world, the Stanford study said, Philip Morris uses “coaches” and “ambassadors” to market IQOS. In Romania and Russia, employment agencies recruit attractive women as young as 19 to market IQOS, according to job postings mentioned in the Stanford report and reviewed by Reuters.

Instagram postings for Be Like Me, a Romanian marketing agency, show young women posing with the IQOS device in recent months, often wearing robe-like uniforms in malls. The Instagram account for RBT Group, a staffing agency in Russia that markets IQOS, similarly shows photos of attractive young women in front of IQOS signs or posing with other “coaches.”

Be Like Me and RBT Group could not be reached for comment.

Other Instagram accounts with the “IQOS” name, including one called “iqostyle.arm,” based in Armenia, continue to show young women posing with the IQOS in what appear to be professional photographs. One photo on that account from last July – two months after Philip Morris said it had suspended all influencer marketing – showed Nika Shuvalova, a 22-year-old Ukrainian model, posing in a swimsuit on a boat with an IQOS.

Shuvalova could not be reached for comment.

A message sent to the “iqostyle.arm” Instagram account was returned by someone calling themselves Tiko, who said the IQOS postings were a “hobby” and that he had not been paid by Philip Morris.

BIG BET ON IQOS AND ‘NORMALIZATION’

The stakes for Philip Morris are huge: The company invested $6 billion in developing “smoke-free” products such as IQOS in hopes of staving off a trend of declining global cigarette sales. In 2018, company CEO Andre Calantzopoulos told shareholders that it hoped to receive about 40% of its revenue – nearly $20 billion – from “reduced risk” products by 2025.

Hunters is ready to be your next TV obsession. The Amazon series follows a band of Nazi hunters living in 1977 New York City. The Hunters have discovered hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living among them and are conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in the United States. Greg Austin stars as Travis Leich, a Nazi hitman who lurks under the radar but is always up to no good. “He’s the force of chaos,” Greg told HollywoodLife. “He’s the antagonist that the Hunters are sort of mainly looking for. They don’t know he exists at the start, but they see his work unfolding. He crosses paths with them in some interesting ways. He’s the force to which they’re responding. He’s very much a ghost. You don’t know much about him. You don’t see much of his history. I didn’t know much about him going into the production. I was sort of given a bit of free reign as to what I wanted to do with him. You do get a little bit about his family later on in the season, but that all just comes together to make his personality in more of a question. Why is he the way he is? There’s not really much reason that you see as to why he is the way he is, which makes him an enigma.”

Travis is just “carrying out this greater power that is looking to bring about the Fourth Reich.” Greg stressed that Travis is a “psychopath through and through” and he’s got this “sadistic glee bubbling under the surface.” Basically, don’t expect a redemption arc for Travis. “A lot of bad guys think they’re doing the right thing. They think that they’re the good guy, but Travis is one of those rare exceptions where he knows he’s the bad guy and he f**king loves it,” Greg said.

Before Hunters, Greg’s most notable roles included playing Charlie Smith in the Doctor Who spinoff Class and young Gordon Selfridge in Mr. Selfridge. But Greg had been searching for something different. “It was unlike anything I’ve read for,” Greg continued. “I’m always playing very posh, English, princely roles. The boy next door sort of thing because that’s just sort of me. I’m a southern English boy who’s slightly awkward and mumbling. I’d been looking for a role that was essentially this, something that was evil and physical and as far away from me that I could go. When I read this, it was literally what I meant. It was literally the role I’ve been waiting for and I went for it and was lucky enough to land it.”

Greg did do his fair share of research to prepare for the role of Travis and he was also inspired by a Killing Eve star. “I bought a copy of Mein Kampf, which was a weird purchase. I wanted to get into the mindset of the man, though,” Greg told HollywoodLife. “It was very informative reading that book. I did a little research into Nazis, especially around the war and how it then progressed into the 50s and 60s. In the 70s, it sort of became a punk thing at one point. Just the evolution of it is very interesting to listen to. I looked into some famous psychopaths. Ted Bundy was a big inspiration. He was a super interesting man and just supremely evil. It’s that sense of complete control over any situation. It’s the wanting to be seen but not seen. He has this mask on and he’s performing at all times, but you never actually see him as a person. I also got a lot of inspiration from Jodie Comer’s character in Killing Eve. I watched that before I started shooting for this and took a lot of inspiration from Jodie.” The entire first season of Hunters is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
